Christian Funeral Services

At Bethel Funerals, we understand that for many Christian families, a funeral is far more than a farewell. It is an act of worship, a celebration of faith, and a profound expression of hope in the resurrection. We are honoured to walk alongside families during these sacred moments, bringing the same spirit of ministry and care to every service we are entrusted with.

We are for compassion, not for profit.

A Christian Funeral Service Rooted in Faith

"We’ll take care of the details, so you don’t have to"

A Christian funeral service is one of the most meaningful gatherings a family can hold. It is a time to mourn with honesty, to celebrate with gratitude, and to rest in the assurance that death is not the final word. Whether your family worships in a Pentecostal church, a Catholic parish, an Anglican congregation, or a Baptist fellowship, we are experienced in supporting services across a wide range of Christian traditions and denominations.

We work closely with your minister, pastor, or celebrant to ensure the service reflects your faith community’s traditions and your loved one’s personal walk with God. From the selection of hymns and scripture readings to the structure of the eulogy and the committal, every detail is handled with reverence and care.

What Does a Christian Funeral Service Typically Include?

While every service is shaped by the family and their faith tradition, a Christian funeral will often include:

  • Scripture Readings: Passages of comfort and hope, such as Psalm 23, John 14, or 1 Corinthians 15, that anchor the service in the promises of faith.
  • Hymns and Worship Music: Whether traditional hymns like ‘How Great Thou Art’ or contemporary worship songs, music is a central part of honouring a life lived in faith.
  • A Eulogy or Tribute: A spoken reflection on the life of your loved one, their faith journey, the people they loved, and the legacy they leave behind.
  • Prayer: Guided prayer for the family, for the congregation, and in commendation of your loved one into God’s keeping.
  • The Committal: A final act of farewell, whether at the graveside for a burial or at the crematorium, conducted with the dignity and reverence the moment deserves.

Burials and Christian Tradition

For many Christian families, burial holds particular significance. It reflects the biblical understanding of the body as sacred, and the hope of resurrection that lies at the heart of Christian faith. A graveside committal, conducted with scripture and prayer, can be one of the most profoundly moving moments of the entire service.

At Bethel Funerals, we coordinate all aspects of the burial process, from liaising with the cemetery and arranging all necessary permits through to coordinating transport and supporting the family at the graveside. We work with cemeteries across Melbourne, Brisbane, and the Sunshine Coast, and can help you find a resting place that feels right for your loved one and your family.

Our Chapels for Christian Funerals

We have beautiful chapels across our Melbourne, Brisbane and Queensland locations, each designed to provide a warm and peaceful setting for a Christian funeral service. Our chapels are suited to intimate family gatherings and larger congregational services alike, with space for multimedia presentations, live streaming for those who cannot attend in person, and the flexibility to incorporate the liturgical and musical elements your tradition calls for.

If your family would prefer to hold the service at your own church or parish, we coordinate everything with the same care and attention, working alongside your church leadership to ensure the day unfolds as it should.

The Bethel Funerals’ difference

Bethel Funerals was founded on a commitment to ministry. Our name, our structure, and the way we serve families all reflect a belief that caring for people in their grief is a sacred calling. As a not-for-profit organisation, every service we provide contributes to mission work, humanitarian aid, and community projects both here in Australia and around the world. We give because we believe in something beyond ourselves, and we hope that same spirit is felt in every interaction your family has with our team.

Not-for-profit

Our organisation was established to help others. We feel called to support families through the difficult process of arranging a funeral. We’re also committed to regular, ongoing financial support to those in need – which is why we give our surplus funds away.

Over 25 years’ experience

We have the experience and the empathy to guide people through the funeral planning process. Over the past 25 years, we’ve helped thousands of families just like yours plan the perfect tribute to their loved ones.

Genuine compassion

We’re committed to caring for you and your family during this difficult time. You can count on our emotional and practical support with whatever you need.

Christ-like care

Bethel Funerals is built upon the principles of Christian love and compassion. We seek to offer peace to the families we minister to and hope to those who endure hardship. We conduct funerals for people of all, or no, faith backgrounds.

Personalising the Service

A Christian funeral is both a universal experience and a deeply personal one. Your loved one had a unique story, a particular faith journey, a set of relationships and memories that belong only to them. We believe the service should reflect that.

Our team can help you incorporate personal photographs, a specially chosen order of service, floral tributes, and memorial keepsakes that honour both the faith and the individual. We offer a full range of products to support the service, including:

Orders of Service booklets and memorial stationery, personalised with your loved one’s photograph and the scriptures or verses that meant most to them. Memorial books for guests to sign and leave messages of love and condolence. A beautiful range of caskets and coffins, from classic solid timber to hand-crafted premium options, as well as eco-friendly wicker for families drawn to a more natural farewell. Cremation urns in a wide variety of materials and styles, including keepsake urns and memorial jewellery for families who wish to share remains among loved ones.

Christian Funerals - Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. We have experience supporting families from a wide range of Christian traditions, including Catholic, Anglican, Uniting, Baptist, Pentecostal, Orthodox, and many others. We work closely with your minister or celebrant and follow your church’s liturgical requirements to ensure the service is conducted appropriately and with care.

The main differences are that burial provides a specific place to visit and pay respects, maintains the body intact, and often aligns with certain religious or cultural traditions. Cremation offers more flexibility with remains and typically has lower costs.

At Bethel Funerals, we respect both choices and can help you decide which option best honours your loved one and your family’s wishes.

Absolutely. While we have our own chapels available, many families prefer to hold the service at their own parish or congregation. We coordinate everything with your church leadership and ensure the day runs smoothly from start to finish.

Some of the most beloved passages include Psalm 23, John 14:1-6, Romans 8:38-39, 1 Corinthians 15:51-57, and Revelation 21:1-4. Your minister or celebrant can offer guidance on what is appropriate for your tradition, and our team is happy to help incorporate the readings that held meaning for your loved one.

Historically, burial has been the predominant choice among Christian traditions, reflecting the theology of bodily resurrection. However, cremation is widely accepted across most Christian denominations today, and the choice ultimately rests with the family and their faith convictions. We respect and support both options fully. You can read more about our burial services and our cremation options on their respective pages.

Yes. Water Cremation is available through our Queensland locations in partnership with The Gentle Way. Some Christian families find it a gentle and meaningful alternative, returning the body to its natural elements in a way that feels peaceful and unhurried. Please note this service is currently available in Queensland only. We are happy to talk through this option if it is something your family would like to explore.
